How can i get investors?

i finished writing a book about 8 months ago. i've been trying to get it published but have had no success. i was thinking of self-publishing. however; it's very expensive and i have no money. i'm only working part-time and have to pay school loans off and full time work is hard to come by. so i was thinking of having people invest in my self publishing to help pay. i guess it's more of a donation rather than an investment but i thought it'd be worth a shot. is there a site where i can set up a program that will allow people to donate money into and it automatically gets sent to my paypal account? also, is this legal to do? i have a faint notion that this may be somewhat illegal; soliciting money online. no idea. i'm bad at things. any advice would truly be appreciated
