Is it appropriate for a waiter to solicit donations in a restaurant?

My family and I went out for supper last night to a local restaurant. After we were finished with our meal, our waiter came up and tried to solicit donations to the children's hospital and asked us each to donate 5 dollars. Now, while I have no problem with charity and donations, I don't think a restaurant was the appropriate time/place for this? Am I wrong?
